A global language with an estimated 483m speakers, Spanish is one of the most widely dispersed and important languages in the world.
The world’s second most spoken language after Mandarin Chinese, the Spanish language is closely related to Latin and is the largest of the group known as the ‘romance languages’.
The original dialect of standard Spanish is Castilian and indeed in many countries, the language is referred to as Castellano however it is important to note that within Spain itself there are important separate languages such as Basque, Catalan and Galician that must be respected.
Due to it’s large and powerful empire Castilian was used across the globe and up until the end of the 18th century would be employed as a diplomatic language and spoken widely in seaports and trading destinations.
The majority of Spanish speakers are based outside Europe with the greatest concentration in the Hispanic Americas. Countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru all use Spanish as their official language, the origins of which can be traced back to the conquistadors.
One of the six official languages of the United Nations, Spanish is also used as an official language by the Union of South American Nations, the Organisation of American States, the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
